Getting Ready to Move

Moving is a big job for most people because it is the most traumatic part of purchasing a new home; yet this need not be the case

Careful planning and the use of the “Moving Checklist” can help to eliminate the majority of the problems most people encounter when moving to a new home.

Moving Checklist

60 Days Before the Move... -
1. Obtain at least 3 quotations from movers and be sure to clarify/request the following: -
- Specific dates of move -
- Location of all items (on/off property) -
- Boxes/packing materials provided at no cost -
- Cost of insurance and deductible -
- Size of truck and anticipated number of trips -
- Ability to move oversized items (large plants/trees) -
- Maximum cost of the move -
- Methods of moving pets -
- Anticipated length of time for move and start time -
- Length of time in business -
- References from local clients -
- Number of works provided for move -
2. Conduct Open House/Yard Sale to dispose of unwanted items -
3. Dispose of any items that cannot be sold or given away -
4. Prepare a list of all suppliers and friends that must be notified (including phone numbers) -
- Electrical supplier -
- Cable -
- Water -
- Gas/heat company -
- Friends/family -
- Banks & financial instutions (re. bank accounts, deposit boxes, credit cards, etc) -
- Car and other licenses -
- Magazines/newspapers and other subscriptions -
- Clubs and other organizations -
- Insurance companies -
5. Determine where moving boxes can be obtained and at what cost -
6. If a long-distance move, detremine the best way transport all vehicles to the new destination -
30 Days Before the Move... -
1. Contact all suppliers (i.e. insurance and utilities) at the new house to ensure service is available the day prior to the move -
2. Contact the property manager - if living in a high-rise - to reserve the elevator for move day -
3. Finalize details with the moving company and execute the purchase order which will cover critical needs -
4. Contact insurance rep to make sure property insurance is organized -
5. Commence packing and ensure that: -
- You pack all the items you require after the day of the move last (kitchen, bathroom supplies, linens, etc) -
- All boxes are properly labelled by room -
- Fragile items (china, glass, etc) are packed in wrapping paper -
- Boxes marked fragile are placed to one side to be loaded on the truck at the end -
- Use magic markers to identify boxes as pen may not be visble -
The Day of  the Move... -
1. ?  -
2. Deliver children and pets to new location -
3. Oversee disconnection of appliances -
4. Contact all utilities at new location to ensure they will be operational --
